JUAN OF THE DEAD

Cheeky Cuban zombie movie; think Shawn of the Dead, with more skin, but not as funny.

KLOWN

9/30/2012

Hollywood is SO going to remake this hilarious social comedy about two men, a boy, and the women in their wake on a canoe trip / "tour de pussy".  Danish TV stars Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam spin-off their TV show, and team-up to write, and star in this future Danny McBride vehicle.

Won an Oscar for best documentary. It's old school talking head interviews, and archival footage, narrated by Harvey Fierstein. Great piece of history about a major player in the Civil Rights Movement.

BEGINNERS

Gentle, sometimes funny yarn about an artist, his recently deceased / dying parents, and his commitment phobic French girlfriend. Kinda quirky, sweet story about love: romantic and familial.

MAKING THE BOYS

11/25/2011

Man, play, movie, movement, milieu. Documentary about the journey of the groundbreaking play: The Boys in the Band.  Mart Crowley was a failed playwright, and a close personal friend of Natalie Wood. Fascinating look at how he turned it around with a little help from his friends, (and William Friedkin.)

FIRE (1996)

My quest to see the films of female directors has led me to a Deepa Mehta's drama about personal choices, culture, and social roles. Groundbreaking and controversial in India due to it's depiction of women in love and challenging the status quo. Lovely, gentle, and suitable for those inexperienced in Hindi film viewing.
